Birds travel great distances possibly up to 12,000 km to reach the lagoon

Mangalajodi is a freshwater zone with marshes, reed beds and rich birdlife. That in every winter thousands of migratory waterfowl descend upon its marshes, transforming the area into a carnival as they jostle about with resident birds. The lagoon hosts over 160 and more species of birds in the peak period (October-February). Birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea and other remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and southeast Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas winter here These birds travel great distances, possibly up to 12,000 km, to reach the lagoon.
